What’s with all the fuzz about Detroit Maid Cafe?

So I have heard recently that there is a new maid cafe open in mid-town Detroit? Okay. That is a very unexpected place to open up one. But there seems to be some mixed reaction with some of the people online by looking at who the maid are, it is not easy to tell why.

Although I have never been there before, but I would like to take a visit if I had a chance too. But here is what I think.

Firstly, they really have my respect. I mean after all, this is the USA and opening up in a midtown. I’m pretty sure they will get discriminated by those racist people or those rednecks from the south. Its not easy for them everyday to wear maid costume, never mind convention cause you only wear it for a couple of days. But for them, they wear almost everyday and given the culture and society over there it is not easy for them either I guess.

Secondly, lets give them the credit that they are trying to promote Japanese Culture. Sure, there is some problem here and there but at least they try. I think they know there is a room for improvement and they will sure work towards it.

A lot of people are saying that people who are black shouldn’t dress as Japanese maid. Personally, I don’t really think only oriental people could dress it. I think everyone can dress, there should be racial diversity and/or equality. I mean we live in a globalized world after all.

On the other hand, there are somethings I don’t really understand. First of all, their name Chou Anime Cafe is err.. Confusing. Because the word ‘chou’ sounds like more like Chinese. Only to find out after a quick search on the web that it is actually a Japanese slang which means “to overdo things” or “to go too far”. So maybe there is a mixed up in the USA? Like all Asian know Kung Fu and good at maths?

They also should try to hired more white people which is quite difficult given the location they are in. Its Detroit after all the blacks make up 81.5% of Detroit’s population. They must be easier to hire as any white woman. They should also hire someone that is cute and good looking not someone that is actually big size and ugly. I’m sorry to say this but going into service industry like this, you need to hire someone that is more appealing. That’s how the Japanese do it. Hire someone that is cute and sexy in maid dress and eventually you will get huge customer. Think about it, have you ever seen any Japanese cafe in Japan hired such people? No. They don’t. Appeal is a top priority.

Although I roughly can understand what the owner of the cafe is trying to tell us that all people can work as a maid in a cafe. But let’s face it, its a No. Physical appearance is important and when it comes to that, skin color is not a matter like I mention before. The size and the appeal is a problem.

Also, given the past that some people in US trying to start up a Maid cafe but went down due to bad business I really wonder how long this business would last.

They do have a website where they post about their staff and their menu, you can go check it out and see for yourself.
